This product not only supplies the carbon needed for plants to thrive, it also has the side benefit of controlling algae. I had a real problem in my tank with red brush algae. Although Seachem does not endorse this product as an algae controller, this product eliminated the algae problem and brought it under control. For a severe problem, you may have to "double dose" for a few days (also not recommended by Seachem, but as long as it is not done for extended periods of time, it does not seem to hurt).
