(More customer reviews)These hoods are cheap, but they serve the purpose for a freshwater aquarium. As another reviewer stated, it does not have a protective cover, so it is exposed to evaporative water and splashing, but the lights are set up a few inches, which helps a little in the case of splashing.
The best part about these hoods is that you can replace the inefficient and low wattage incandescent bulbs with good mini compact fluorescent tubes (preferably the single loop kind, not the spiral kind) which output about 13 watts per tube to give you 26 watts over a 10 gallon tank. It has been just enough light to grow my plants, whereas a single tube fluorescent hood or light strip will only give you 15 Watts.
Perfecto does have a better quaility incandescent hood that you can retrofit with fluorescents for $10-$15 more.
