(More customer reviews)I listened to a store clerk and purchased this item even though I knew I should use the tried and true method of testing my water every day with a new tank.
I also purchased some bacteria to put in my new set up. Normally I dont work this way and it lulled me into a false sense of security that my tank had cycled faster than normal when the ammonia alert never indicated any ammonia in my tank and I went on to purchase a few more fish - a few more days and no ammonia - great - a few more fish and then disaster strick - the fish started acting as though they had ammonia poisening. I took my water to have it tested. 6.0 mg/L and NOTHING showed on this alert - it was still yellow.
If you value your fish (and your sanity) just test your water and dont take short cuts.
This product does not work - I only lost 3 fish - but that was 3 fish too many and Im sure they would have preferred that I had tested the water and not relied on this!

Lee's Triple-Flow Corner Filter, Large Review

(More customer reviews)This filter does the job as expected. I am not so found of the attachable base on the bottom. It make the filter sit crooked in my gravel. I also would change the air tube. I like using an aeration stone, added oxygen in tank, but the little tabs that hold the tubing in place are fragile. The sloping lid makes it hard to keep the poly filter material in place while placing the filter into the tank. Otherwise, this is the kind of filter I was looking for to place in my 10 gallon tank.

(More customer reviews)If your snail shells are rotting away, along with tail and fin rot on guppies, and you're already using PH UP. Well then, you need to be sure you're also using Diamond carbon-ammonia blend in a filter. From what I've gathered, it's the Aloe Vera in the Stress Coat that has a 5.3 PH level, that's driving down the PH in most tanks, and causing fin rot and snail shell rotting. It also causes that white stuff (lime or calcium deposits from LOW PH) to build up on filters and lights. Keep your tank "true blue" (PH 7.0-7.2) with Diamond Blend Premium Carbon-Ammonia. Don't forget to use Stress Zyme with every water change, like the rest of these chemicals they should be used weekly.
It's a "circle of life" where these three chemicals (carbon-ammonia blend, Stress Coat, and Stress Zyme) are playing off one another, while keeping your tank looking "true blue" (7.0-7.2) and crystal clear. If you hold one chemical out of this "true blue" balanced circle of chemicals, you'll end up with tank problems (PH 6.8 or less). You shouldn't need to add the chemical "PH UP" if you're using Carbon-Ammonia blend in a filter with these two other chemicals (Stress Coat and Stress Zyme). Carbon by itself lasts longer in helping keep the "PH UP".
If you've fed bottom feeders live black worms, then you'll want to keep those worms breeding on the bottom. You don't suck up gravel and sand to remove old food, you install an aquarium circulation pump underwater and aim it at the bottom section you need cleaning. The filters should remove excess food which is kicked up into the circulating flow of water in the tank. I like using the entire backside of aquarium for hangon filters of any design. Move the pump daily to another location to keep the bottom clean and alive with black worms. These circulation pumps come in many strengths, middle of the road is fine. Don't forget to put a timer on it, I do about 3 hours of cleaning out of every 12 hours, to give fish a breather. Basically it will move gravel around to look like a Sunny or Blue Gill hole to breed in, as it kicks up old food into a circulating water flow, which then gets trapped in filters. If you don't clean the bottom it will smell like a sewer hole, and that stinks.

(More customer reviews)The Cascade 300 inline filter is a good cheap filter for a five or 10 gallon tank that requires a slow to medium current (I use it in 5gal betta tanks) but I would not recommend it in anything bigger as any bio-load over 'light' would overwhelm it.

It has a bio-sponge section and a "Disposable Carbon filter Cartridge" that they want you to buy in packs. I pried open the cartridge it came with to find low grade carbon pellets so I replaced them with Marineland Black Diamond Premium and it works even better now.

(More customer reviews)This product has had strangely mixed reviews, from exuberant to downright hate mail. I bought it because I thought that the other canister filter I was considering would be too powerful and would churn up the water too much for my small turtles.
When you test a filter, you can't just look at the water and say it works great; you have to test the water. Believe me, the turtles can tell the difference when there is a high ammonia content. You would too, if you were swimming in your own pee!
I've had this filter for 4 weeks. The first three weeks I could get no bio filtration at all, and the ammonia stayed at a high level. Then for the last week the filter has worked great and my ammonia is down at zero.
So I can highly recommend this product for a small tank normally used for baby turtles. What I do NOT recommend is the carbon inserts that go with the product! The insert is basically a disposable bag of activated carbon that is machined into smooth pellets. These pellets do a horrible job of absorbing the organics that they are supposed to control.
In the third week, I went to the aquarium store, bought a nylon bag, and filled it with over-the-counter activated carbon. These are basically raw chips of coal. The rough sides of the coal provide ample porous surface area for absorption. Also the activated carbon at the pet store comes a lot cheaper than the 501 carbon inserts.
You don't know clean water until you see the difference between the pellets and the activated carbon chips; you'll see the difference in just one day. But what's more important is that one week later, my ammonia is down to zero.
Turtles create a LOT of ammonia. With the right carbon, this filter will do the job. The proof is in the testing.
